Annie's Furniture: a labor of family love for over 34 years
|It was always a dream of Norma Ann "Annie" King and Clarence E. "Junior" King, Jr. to build an enchanting gift and furniture store within a charming replica of a farm home.
Driving back from Branson with a trunk load of goodies from a typical getaway weekend, Clarence would be known to say, "We're making memories!" Reflecting back on those fun memories, Joy King-Fahrmeier, the youngest daughter of the couple, remembers dad asking mom about opening up a unique gift store here in Excelsior Springs.
From that dream the store known as Annie's was born, opening its doors in 1982.
In the early years, Clarence, Norma Ann and Joy lived in the store, the second story was designed to be a home. Joy remembers her dad thinking it would be ideal to live upstairs. It didn't take long for the family to realize the store needed more space for it's growing line of inventory. In no time at all, the store outgrew its space.
“It was in 1984 when Dad asked my older sister, Jill King-Hilke, to come on board and join Annie’s staff. Jill was looking for a job at that time and has been here ever since,” Joy recalled.
Joy was just 16 years old when she started decorating the store for her mom and doing community service for Annie’s.
Both Jill and Joy share a deep pride for their parents, especially for their father’s abilities, knowledge and drive. Clarence was mayor of Excelsior in the early 1970’s. In addition to that, Clarence also served as a member of the Lion’s Club, the Excelsior Springs Hospital Board, and received the Citizen of the Year award from the Chamber of Commerce. Clarence is probably best remembered for building the King’s Addition neighborhood on the northwest side of town. The homes in that addition are still in high demand and families there enjoy his quality built homes.
“Not only did Dad love his work, he was a devoted husband and father. Our parents were married for over 57 years,” Joy shared.
Jill and Joy fondly remember their mother being a perfectionist in every way. Norma Ann successfully balanced her time taking care of everyone in her family. She was very much a loving, nurturing mother and wife who always knew how to make the perfect home for her family.
“Jill and I were very thankful for being raised in a loving, Christian home. Mom was our best friend, not just the glue in our family. She was a woman who always knew what she wanted out of life and had big dreams and goals. Because of that, Annie’s grew to become what it is today,” Joy said.
“Our parents made us who we are today. We are successful business owners because of their training. We will always treasure what our parents taught us through tough love and very high standards,” Joy said.
Destined to one day carry the torch of the family business, Jill added home design and consultations to the store’s offerings in the late 1980’s. She would make home visits, personally deliver the accessories and decorate the homes. It wasn’t long before Jill needed help and tried to get Joy join her in home consultations. Joy refused at first, apprehensive because of her shyness, and had a very hard time going out to a customer’s home. She eventually overcame her shyness after watching her sister, time after time, fill her car full of accessories and enjoying her time decorating homes. Customers were loving Jill’s talent and expertise.
Once Joy began consulting, Jill backed away a bit, giving her little sister time to shine and develop her own skills at decorating. Now, with years of experience between them, Jill and Joy make the perfect team in everything they do. The sisters are a complete decorating service, with the same level of perfection their mother held and capable of meeting all of their customers needs.
Jill and Joy pour everything they have into the business to make Annie’s what it is today, building on the business started by their parents over 34 years ago. For all your home decorating and accessory needs, stop in and visit Jill and Joy soon.
